BloggingBrum

it’s a blog for Birmingham. That’s it.

Mark Steadman

Mark is a web developer from Birmingham who works for HRO’C Interactive, a prominent digital marketing agency based in Edgbaston. He also works on freelance projects under the Bluemilkshake name. Mark runs a number of successful web projects including the New Media Junkie, a monthly podcast, aswell as the increasingly popular Dial-a-Rant service. Mark spends far too much of his time infront of a computer, and if he still lived at home his mother would be forever nagging him to get some fresh air. He has a cat though, so that’s good enough.

I love Birmingham because…

I subscribe to the Guardian’s Tech Weekly podcast, one of many great audio offerings from the erstwhile Groiniad and listen every week to Aleks Krotoski’s slightly embarrassing puns and the rest of the team’s chatter about…stuff.

I like the show, but imagine my dismay when I fire up the iPod and hear that this week, they’re having a Manchester special and not only that, but apparently Manchester is now the UK’s second city.

I put this down to Alex not being from around these parts but besides being deeply patronising that is in fact irrelevant. Have I had my head up my arse for the past few years or so - yes, but that’s also irrelevant - or have we suddenly all decided that Birmingham, the second largest city in the UK is no longer thesecond city? Did I miss a meeting? Do I still get a vote? Can we bring in the Irish to sway the result on this one? [Little bit o’ politics there]

According to this BBC news article I’ve been pretty slow off the mark here; apparently this has been the case since 2002. Why wasn’t I informed? Ever since my 5th-year schoolteacher told me Birmingham was the UK’s “second city” that knowledge has been quite secure in my head, but now up is down, black is white, and I don’t know who I am anymore!

I don’t know if it’s possible to feel any sense of outrage or indignence about this because quite frankly, I can’t think of any great reasons why Birmingham should top Manchester if a new Mori poll were to be commissioned. Our biggest band is UB-bleedin’-40, the only reggae band notable for not playing any reggae. You might think that Black Sabbath are bigger: they’re not, it’s just that Ali Campbell doesn’t have his own reality show…yet. Perhaps the best thing we could say is - and perhaps this should form our new slogan - “Birmingham: at least we don’t have a congestion charge”.

I don’t want to get onto a downer here. I’ve been fighting a personal fight lately to be “interesting” and I think Birmingham needs to do the same. It’s a great place to live, a great place to work, there’s some good nightlife and a lot more greenery than anywhere else. And then there’s the canals. But I think maybe we need a big campaign. Nothing that says “we’re Birmingham and we’re better than them up north” but maybe something more akin to “there’s more to Ireland dan dis”.

This stuff is already happening. The Big Picture, Creative Republic, Fearce Festival and bags more. Indeed, the first Birmingham Bloggers meetup was fueled by a conversation about how Birmingham could become a stronger force for blogging. The thing is, how many people even inside Birmingham know that these things are going on, so that they can be proud of it? That’s how we become a city with power and influence: not by displaying billboards advertising a new exhibition, but by getting people talking about how great this place is, so that that message permeates through the walls and out into the open.

So here’s a thought. If you’re a Twitterer, why not write a new tweet starting with “I love Birmingham Because”? Iºll use Summize to gather them together and we’ll display them here at bloggingbrum.com.

Look out for mine: my username is marksteadman. What will you say?

I can haz cheep billbordz

A new site: signposter.com, which lets you create your own billboard ad (a real one that will go on a real billboard) is throwing a big launch bash in Edgbaston Cricket Ground on June 26th.

If you own a small or medium-sized business and you fancy getting your hands on some outdoor advertising space instead of giving it over to big brands, it could work out a lot cheaper than you think. At least, that’s what they say. You can register for the event at www.signposter.com and make your own mind up!

A place for freelancers

If you work for yourself or you take on freelance projects on the side, whether you blog or not, the new Freelancers in Birmingham Facebook group could be a great way for you to widen your network of contacts. It can be a lonely life especially if you don’t have a dayjob to go to or you’re part of a coworking space, but who knows, if the group takes off, there may be chance for the odd meetup.

Birmingham Post named Regional Newspaper of the Year

The Birmingham Post has been named Regional Newspaper of the Year at the 2008 Newspaper Awards aswell as scooping - get it, scooping? - the Newspaper Printer of the Year award.

Thanks to Joanna Geary for retweeting the news from the Post’s Twitter feed.

Birmingham to play host to the UK’s first WordCamp conference

Birmingham’s now been picked as the location for the UK’s first WordCamp conference, a gathering of writers, developers and fans who all use the WordPress blogging platform.

More details can be found at uk.wordcamp.org and the WordCamp UK blog, setup by my own fair hands. This will quite likely make the agenda for the next bloggers’ meetup, whose Facebook group always has a fair amount of lurkers, so working on the same principle the blog and its accompanying podcast - which will go live when the time is right - should hopefully provide some useful accounts for those who aren’t able or are too cool to attend.

Bloggers meetup #3a: Agendaless

A bunch of us met yesterday at the Goose in Selly Oak, so big thanks to Si Hammond for suggesting when and where.

It was essentially a pissup, much in the vein of the second “official” meetup back in February. I met some new faces: those faces do have names however I’m in no fit state to remember them. I enjoyed shaking hands with some interesting people with intriguing ideas, and look forward to hearing more from them after shoving business cards into sweaty palms. Sorry Pete.

One bonus however, we got to see Chris Unitt’s ASBO, so well done that man.

Here’s my videodump comprising some of the night’s “highlights”.

Does Dave Gorman tweet?

The comedian Dave Gorman likes a good meme, as demonstrated by his Googlewhack Adventure, but spending an hour tweeting pun-laden domain names with some members of the Birmingham bloggers group (including BloggingBrum’s “own” Kevin Rapley) led me to wonder whether this friendly bearded lover of the PowerPoint presentation would actually ever manage to get any work done, what with the constant bleating of his numerous followers and followees.

I’ve recently had to stop using Flock at work because its various social networking features present too much of a distraction. The knowledge that my unread email count is only a click away or that I could be updating my Facebook status in a second is too much for a man like me, and I have to hunker down between my considerable shoulder blades and immerse myself in alpha-wave-rich music delivered through headphones burrowing deep into my earlobes.

By way of demonstration, here are just a few of the domain ideas that got thrown about last night. It’s all Jon’s fault anyway.

Bloggers meet #3: Coworking

Yesterday, March 31st saw us at Rooty Fruity’s in the Custard Factory discussing, in the main the idea of coworking. You can check out the video of the discussion at Andrew Dubber’s Viddler page and read Pete Ashton’s roundup of the event.

Also on the table were the results of the AWM-sponsoured trip to SXSWi, more of which can be found at South by South West Midlands, and answers to the question “how do we bring social media technologies to non-geeks?”
