Birmingham half marathon entries now open

Further to my earlier post the Birmingham half marathon is now accepting entries at £22! Blimey not cheap I’ve entered marathons for less. It starts at 9:30AM on Sunday 26th October and has the theme of “Race against Climate Change”.

I’m hopeful for a personal best as Nell McAndrew is running so I’ll be trying to keep up with her!

See you there!

Birmingham Online Business Showcase

I’ve recently read about a new online project that is being launched shortly called MyBrumTV - the first time I’ve found an interesting article in a free paper posted through my door! It’s created by a partnership of Birmingham Independent Group and South Birmingham College and looks like it’s essentially an online directory but sounds like it trying to use more alternative media to promote those listings e.g. footage of business and interviews with owners.

I’m interested to find out more but I’ve got 20 days odd to wait if you take a look at the countdown. However it does look like the cat might be out of the bag a bit if you search Google as what looks like the development site is available through mybrumtv.net - there is a media pack here that might be of interest but everything else seems not to be working at this time. Perhaps it’s just a place holder because otherwise they’ve got a lot of work to do in 20 days!

I’m disappointed with the social media impact of this project as I can’t find a thing about it (feel free to point me in the right direction). I would have thought a project like this should be leaning heavily on social media at least locally to boost the profile.

And if anyone is reading this who is related to the project please update the holding page to give it a page title other than “Untitled document” - a pet hate of mine.

Local elections to get live webcast

The local elections that take place on the 1st May 2008 shall be broadcast across the magic of interweb on the Birmingham Local Elections website. All results will be published as they come in and a live webcast will keep you up to date with all the latest comings and goings.

Radio interference on St Marys Road, Harborne

Has anyone got any idea why I might be getting radio interference every time I drive down St Marys Road in Harborne?

I know it isn’t a problem with my radio - it only happens in this location. I can’t see any new buildings that might be blocking the signal.

It’s really affecting my enjoyment of music on the way to work in the morning - how annoying!

Where is the Birmingham Marathon?

After the usual showpiece of the London marathonon Sunday I asked myself where is the Birmingham marathon? Especially as there are a fair few others in not quite so well known locations.

Birmingham is well known for holding excellent sporting events including the World Indoor Athletics Championships so where is the high profile marathon? Being a keen runner I’ve always been underwhelmed by the amount of running events in the area (or maybe just the publicity isn’t up to much).

After digging a bit online I’ve found a couple of events worth looking at but also the promise of a city centre half marathon in October which looks very exciting as it looks like a long term commitment for a distance race in the city (although no details available as yet!). Who knows how this might evolve in the future.

I’ll certainly be running it even if I am still experiencing extreme sleep deprivation due to my first sprog being born (hopefully in September). I think running in your home city makes it an even better experience. Who’s joining me?

Blues bosses arrested

For any Blues fans out there it might not be good news - David Sullivan and Karren Brady have been arrested and questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and false accounting.

This is part of an football corruption investigation by the City of London police I’m sure this isn’t going to be concluded anytime soon though.

Blues are already having a bad time at the moment sitting 4 points off relegation from the Premiership.

The changing face of Harborne?

Anyone that has been down the High Street of Harborne recently can’t help to notice that the old Rover garage is no more and has been replaced by a new property development. I’ve been quite interested to see all the activity taking place, for the life of me I had no idea why they were drilling holes for weeks on end (oil perhaps?).

I spotted an article about the new AXIS scheme and it would seem there is underground parking for these 94 new apartments which is lucky for the new owners as parking in Harborne is currently hit and miss or more expensive than buying a property (£4 in the Varsity I ask you!).

I do think the claim that it will “trigger future regeneration of the area” is a little over the top and I see fail to see how 94 flats will fit in that space - £185,000 for a shoe box isn’t my idea of value. Still at least I don’t have to stare at the thoroughly uninspiring Rover 25 now when I’m sat in traffic.
